Trans-Asias
[ZONE]
The stories in this zone are the work of MA students at The Courtauld, University of London enrolled on two special option courses: “Strolling Isfahan: Masters, Merchants, and Monarchs,” convened by Professor Sussan Babaie, and “Beijing and Beyond: Art and Empire in Early Modern China,” taught by Dr Stephen Whiteman. Called the “Trans-Asias/Things That Talk Project,” this initiative is an integral part of our efforts to develop new approaches in our joint research and teaching about art from across Asia at the Courtauld. Our goal is to train our students to become agile in deploying analytical tools and methodologies of transculturality and trans-Asian thinking toward new histories of art and architecture.

Culture on the Move
[ZONE]
In a nutshell, cultural translation refers to processes in which the meanings and materiality of texts, things, or practices transform when transferred to different cultural contexts. As a field, it is highly inter- or multidisciplinary, not in the least because the term itself can denote either a ‘culturally informed’ type of translation, or the ‘translation/transfer’ of culture or cultural forms themselves. In addition, it can refer to the transformation of all types of cultural expressions; those that can be transferred in time, in space or from one medium to another by a wide variety of ‘translators’.

Transcultural objects
[ZONE]
Human beings desire beautiful things, and when those things come from far away, they become even more desirable. Unsurprisingly, then, today’s museum collections are full of objects that have travelled long distances to satisfy the desires of human beings. But it wasn’t just objects that travelled: materials, design ideas, and technologies also travelled, especially within regions and during periods in which contacts intensified. The objects that emerge from the exchange between Asia and Europe we call ‘transcultural objects’.

Mycenaean Treasures
[ZONE]
Mycenaean civilization flourished in mainland Greece and the Aegean islands in the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1450-1200 BCE), the time in which the famous epics of Homer, the Iliad and Odyssey, are situated. The Mycenaeans left behind an impressive material legacy, including the remains of mighty palaces, many precious objects, highly decorative pottery, as well as thousands of clay tablets written in the Linear B script. These objects not only inform us about the society, religion and culture of this ancient people, but they also have amazing biographies of their own.
